Abstract: The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) reviews applications for approval of veterinary drugs including drugs used in animal feeds. Food safety effects of veterinary drugs on edible products from treated animals are evaluated as part of our pre-approval review process for drugs. Surveillance monitoring of animal feed is one of our post-approval activities. Talks in this session cover three specialty areas of food safety assessment conducted at CVM and an enhancement of its animal feed safety system. Each talk presents an historical review of modifications and refinements made over time to the evaluation process and to standards applied, ending with the current state of assessment in the specialty area or with the enhancement of the feed safety system.
